Passed July 2011
"It is with great sadness that we had to inform everyone of the passing of Ray Schwalm but my family were blessed with a wonderful husband, loving father and grandfather. He was very much a family man and had a great sense of humour. He looked back at his time in the Army with great fondness and was happy to recently catch up with a few of them in Coventry.

Thank you to everyone for their sincere words and messages."

A Tale from the past
Many of us have very fond memories of Ray , he was a great colleague and lots of fun.

Some of you would not know that on our road trip to Borneo via Singapore in 1960, Ray had a terrible accident when his QL Lorry left the road whild traversing a bridge over a river. I was directly behind and when I pulled up at the bridge all I could see in the murky river were the wheels where the lorry had overturned.
Within a minute thankfully, Ray came to the surface after clambering out of his cab. Me and all the other drivers (some of them will receive this Email) had a great sigh of relief when we saw that he had survived, that was Ray a former boxer and survivor.

Tony Eustace was a Cornish tin miner he was in 1 Troop amd a most likable guy he allways had a smile for everyone and was great fun to be with.
I learnt that he ran a pub in his later life and I bet he was a great landlord.

Hugh (Paddy) Ramsey was in the same section as myself in 1 Troop he was a great friend of Dave Brunning, He was not very tall but would do the work of a man twice his size, and was a realy nice guy, and a good Sapper in every sence of the word.

Tony Holmshaw and I WERE PLANT FITTERS together in the Sqn and good friends We finshed our service at the same time as Plant instructors at Chatham. After demob, Tony changed into a civilian suit and continued working in the same department for quite a number of years before falling ill and unfortunately passing away. He was accompanied in Mallacca by his wife Gina,

Yippee Goodwin was what I call a true and tipical Australian a great friend to have,He spent most of his working life before joining the army in the outback working on a cattle station as a boundary rider, I would listen to his stories of the outback for hours.
Sadly I will never meet him again.

  6. FROM FRED ALDRED
Further to your message regarding Jim
He joined the Squadron in 1948 and was in it for as long as I was there and after. I left in 1955 by Casevac to Blighty and Jim
was with the Sqn prior to joining 410 Plant
He received the B.E.M for his achievments in Malaya and was an excellent leader. I am proud, as are so many of my friends from the Sqn, to have served with Jim. His style of wit and humour will never be matched.I have notified as many of the lads as I can and have spoken to Dorothy and forwarded our condolances. He will be sadly missed by all. May he rest with God in peace. God Bless Jim
    Regards Fred Aldred

  7. Jim (Timber) Woods was the SQMS in 410 untill it was disbanded in 1962. He was well liked by all the Troop. I spoke to his wife a few months ago and she told me he was not well. I will let all the 410 survivors know through my site. RIP Jim.

Very sad about Jim. I served with him in 410 and also met up with him in Long Marston 1980-82 when he was 'looking after' all the cadet forces equipment in the West Midlands. I was the MTO at the depot and saw Jim frequently. He was one of the gentlemen of the Corps. A great Irishman. RIP Jim
